Ard Boyz 2011 Musings

So recently I’ve found myself pondering what I’m going to be running for Ard Boyz this year. There are 3 stores in super easy distance for me to attend it at so that shouldn’t be a problem however picking my army might be.

Just as a heads up I sent in my army list for the Bugeater GT taking place next weekend and it looks like this:

HQ
Belial-130

Elite
Upgraded Deathwing Squad-290
1xDual LC, 4xTH/SS, Standard, Apothecary

Troop
Deathwing Squad-235
5xTH/SS, Cyclone

Deathwing Squad-235
5xTH/SS, Cyclone

Deathwing Squad-235
5xTH/SS, Cyclone

Deathwing Squad-235
4xTH/SS, 1xDual LC, Cyclone

Deathwing Squad-245
2xChainfists, 1xPower Weapon, 2xPowerfists, Cyclone

Deathwing Squad-245
2xChainfists, 1xPower Weapon, 2xPowerfists, Cyclone

36 Terminators w/30 of them Scoring. 24 of them with Storm Shields. It’s also toting a nasty 14 Missile shots per turn to open transports for my hitty goodness. I’ve also included the two standard squads as this allows me to get some much needed shooting to wear down some horde units if I need to since those can successfully bog my army down.

As you can see I’m on a bit of a Terminator kick. Looking at a lot of the armies I see in RTT’s and GT’s I’m coming to the conclusion that most armies don’t really bring enough to drop an absurd number of Terminators. Great example of this will be my last batrep for the Railhead Rumble. That games also allowed me to see in action the difference the FAQ has made for Templars.

So lately I’ve been thinking of a large Terminator presence army. There are really only 3 armies this qualifies with; Deathwing, Space Wolves Logan Wing, and Black Templars. Now I’m bit over Space Wolves so that leaves me with Deathwing and Black Templars.

Both forces offer some advantages based on the last few years worth of Ard Boyz missions. They have limited high movement units and they are limited on KP’s. Difference is that most of the a Deathwing list scores while you’ll be reserving you scoring units in the Black Templars. Also, while Templars can’t add heavy weapons to their assault squads they do come with tank hunter and re-roll all fails to hit in CC which is pretty huge. So on to the two lists I’m considering right this second for Ard Boyz.

Deathwing:
Belial

Upgraded Squad found above
2xDeathwing Squads w/5 TH/SS & Cyclone

2xDeathwing Squads w/1 LC, 4 TH/SS, & Cyclone
4xDeathwing Squads w/2xChainfists, 2xPowerfists, 1xPower Weapon, Cyclone

2xTyphoons w/MM

46 Terminators w/11 Cyclones and 2 MM. Enough shots to put a hurt on units that you can’t quite catch. Tons of resilient and nasty troops. Fearless. 2 Units that can grab if they are still alive at the end of the game and if not no big loss. The plan would probably be to run them in 4 groups of 10 Termies evenly split between CC and Shooty Terms with Belial and company as a deepstriking wildcard.

OR

Black Templars:
Marshall w/LC, SS, Terminator Honors, Frag Grenades, Artificer Armor
4 Tactical Termies w/1 Chainfist, 3 Powerfists, 2 Cyclones, Tank Hunter

Castellan w/LC, SS, Terminator Honors, Frag Grenades, Artificer Armor
4 Tactical Termies w/1 Chainfist, 3 Powerfists, 2 Cyclones, Tank Hunter

Emperors Champ w/Preferred Enemy Buff

2x8 Assault Terminators w/4xLC, 4xTH/SS
5 Tactical Termies w/1 Chainfist, 4 Powerfists, 2 Cyclones, Tank Hunter

4x5 Templars in Rhinos

2xTyphoons

In this list you’ll need to hide your troops. It’s got nearly the firepower of the Deathwing list but it’s more concentrated and most of it is St9. The Castellan and Marshall are beasts with the re-roll to hit and each “Tactical” termie squad would have a big hitter with it. You’d have to hide your troops more but I think it would do alright.

So the question is….Which do you guys find more appealing. I’ve got an idea of what I like most but I’m interested in opinions.

both would be good unless somebody DE wrack-liq spam (doubtfull) or Demoshier cannons or Plasma spam (more likely). IG horad with lots of PWs and LC HW teams could also hurt you. Maybe add 1 or 2 flammers to counter this.
I know someone who has been running 2 6 man tac termie units for BT. Tank hunters and 2x cyclones in each unit. They can put the hurt down on light vehicles and have a pretty good tally againt heavy vehicles like LR's as well as doing well against infantry. For improved survivability of the termie command units you can get a SS for the sarge seems he has access to the armoury, and a mantle for one of the IC's to absorb the odd melta shot.

But personally i prefer the deathwing due to having a nice mix of dakka+hitty, but i think a solid dual-wing list would be more versatile and open up more options.
I think you loose too much mobility with "walking" termies. I think it could struggle vs certain fast armies. I used to run a terminator army that walked and when you face that one or two bad matchups, it really feels helpless as they play keep away.

You could even have a bad match up vs bike/thunderfire cannon army. Foot slogging across difficult ground to chase bikesis not fun. Also there are alot of 3 vindi BA lists up there, something to think about. I have not seen them at the rrt's that we both attended, but there was 3 or 4 at Con of the North. All depends on the store you go to.

With GK's being the team to beat, I think you will see alot more plasma out there. I know I added a bunch in my Bugeater list :)
BT can come in useful here, it's a little harder to play keep away with units that have Zeal. Although you could kite them like a rageing unit to make playing keep-away easier... but the TH cyclones flying about whatever your going to use to kite might not last very long!

The bike/TFC combo would be annoying, but i rarely see bikes, or TFC's in my local area, not sure what its like up on the American GT scene. As for 3 vindi BA lists, I run one occasinoally, and getting to within 24" of a unit is difficult without exposing your side armour to something on the other end of the board, BUT, with 3... there might not be much left (which is another + to deathwing, being able to take mass SS + CMS in the same unit)
I would go with the templars, because they have righteous zeal. If your opponent can't kill off the entire assault termie bubble, then they just come at you faster. Because of this I would also give them all thss (because your opponent will be concentrating fire on them, one unit at a time).
Terminator spam is nice - I run it myself - but backed by the ravenwing melta bikers - which really help the list tick - far more than the speeders do. Honestly I think I'd prefer a reclusiarch or even try and fit in Ezekial over 2 speeders - especially at 2500.

Demolishers and Plasma Cannons aren't huge worries really - unless your deepstriking in. Obviously it sucks when they hit - but generally I found demo's hit 2/3 guys, plasma can 1 or 2 - just because you should be spreading nicely out :)

Back to the lists - I like the tactical terminator inclusion - at 2500 it does give a nice bit of added "infantry" culling - and against lists that aren't infantry heavy they still are going to cause issue's (if not more so with 2xCF per squad).

I'm assuming Belial with LC's - he's there to take 2+ from shooting and take his 6 I5 attacks on the charge (due to banner), though against MEQ's hitting on 3's does have its value with a TH - and makes him a little less useless vs big gribbly things - but again, I am never short of a hammer.
*something about ard boyz*

Love the new logo.

Glad you like it buddy. I'm rather happy with it :)
I'd go with Dark Angels... I played several variants of your list and they're TOUGH... you HAVE to wipe the unit out... which isn't easy. The amount of firepower they soak up is insane...

I'm not sure how it's done list-wise (or if the points work), but my brother is considering 9 squads of termies!! o.O

The elite slotted termies will be all LC except for one TH/SH with one Cyclone (in case you get tied up against MC or Dreads..)

For troops, one 5 man Upgraded Deathwing termies with Banner, apoth, cyclone, 1x LC and rest TH/SH

Then, 5 squads of 5 man Deathwing termies with cyclone, 1x LC and rest TH/SH.

Lastly, 3 Ravenwing Bikers, with meltas... so that, the termies would be ~ half table in first turn "Deathwing Assault"... if the bikers are still alive....
