Grey Knights 1850 - Pallies, Henchmen, and Dreads...Oh My!

My attention span lost traction again today and I started playing with army builder looking at 1850 lists that I might consider particularly nasty. This is one I came up with which is pretty gross:

HQ

Coteaz-100

Elite

5 Paladins-315
2xHammers, 2xHalberds, 1xSword, 2xPsycannon

5 Paladins-315
2xHammers, 2xHalberds, 1xSword, 2xPsycannon

5 Paladins-315
2xHammers, 2xHalberds, 1xSword, 2xPsycannon

Troop

5 Henchmen-70
Psyback

4 Henchmen-66
Psyback

4 Henchmen-66
Psyback

4 Henchmen-66
Psyback

4 Henchmen-66
Psyback

4 Henchmen-66
Psyback

Heavy Support

Dreadnought-135
2xTL-Autocannons, Psybolt Ammo

Dreadnought-135
2xTL-Autocannons, Psybolt Ammo

Dreadnought-135
2xTL-Autocannons, Psybolt Ammo

Total: 1850

It's got a more than respectable amount of firepower and the Paladins add a healthy amount of assault goodness combined with their firepower. Overall a pretty nasty list if I do say so myself. Thoughts?

Didn't we have this conversation about worthless Troops before?

Worthless troop issues only apply if they actually cost points. 6 scoring units for 100pts is well worth it. At that point level they don't need to support, just score. And at 2k you can actually take a GM which will allow you to make the pallies score if you think you need it. At this point value it's the vehicle that matters, not the models in side for their cost.
Why 4-5 model troops? If you're going to max-min it, might as well take 3-model troop units each. Then with the extra points, upgrade 3 of those psybacks to chimeras so that your pallies can get a ride.

Also, combine 2 units of pallies into 1 10-man squad. You can always combat squad, but in annihilation, it'll save you 1 KP. Consider a banner for this unit (and perhaps psybolt ammo).

Upgrading to Chimera's is pretty pointless. Since you Pallies would be riding the tank would get stun locked pretty easy wihtout fortitude.

And it eases target priority while reducing your effectiveness. The trick is to make them decide between heavy weapons on the pallies or the tanks. Not make target priority easier.

Also regarding the 10-man squad the points at 1850 is a thought. Since I wouldn't be running a GM at this level it makes a bit of sense since I probably won't outflank. I could then drop 5 of the additional infantry to take psybolt...That might be a worthwhile tweak.
I like.
I'm a little mad that I didn't think of this one first....this seems so mean to me. I might throw in a mystic or two to give me some deepstrike beacons but that is a minor criticism as 15 paladins can walk across a board (if they have to). Nice... extra points for creativity.
How does this win a Capture and Control mission?

The army has the tools for it but honestly it'll depend on what your facing. As has been stated previously Paladins can walk across the table if needed. You ensure your C&C token is hidden from sight so that one of your 4 man squads can just camp it. Keep 2 other small units in reserve to run up to it if they have to. That should ensure it doesn't change hands. Use your shots to destroy your opponents mobility. Screen the 3 full transports with the empty ones and head across the table. It's got the units to contest or even take objectives and it has the shots to clear almost any squad off an objective. Shouldn't be to hard.
I've pondered this list variant myself from time to time, but end up wondering why I'm taking 3x5 paladins for 945 when I could have 3x10 purifiers with 4x PC and 1 hammer for 855.

I need to paint both ;), so I'll probably give them some testing as well

You shouldn't even be on here reading! Get painting!!!!!! :)

Oddly you're only getting 6 more storm bolter shots when moving than the pallies. Same number of Psycannons on the move. The purifiers do have a superior psychic power but are far more vulnerable to small arms and the games favorite heavy weapon...Missile Launchers.

I will say it's a valid choice to swap out for the Paladins since it'll also enable you to buy an Inquisitor lord w/psycannon and 3 servo-skulls. I think it's comes down to your playstyle as both have extremely valid points and uses.
The main advantages I see over pallies are:

-More shots (only 6 per unit as you noted)
-Cleansing flame
-You get double the psycannon shots if you stand still
-You're fearless so no morale/shenanigan vulnerability
-More attacks in close combat
-Can combat squad in non kp missions to have 6 obnoxious units for your opponent to deal with
-90 points cheaper

But then again as you said, the downside is that you're much more vulnerable to small arms fire, I wonder how it would come out (i havent table-tested either)

And painting?! All I've done is work lately, I haven't painted a darn thing...
Times a tickin Mr. Painter man!!!!!!

I do agree with your points regarding the advantages. I think it can go either way with the advantages both provide. Maybe something to look into :)

Heck, take the purrifiers and rhino's even.
just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren't loading properly. I'm not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I've tried it in two different browsers and both show the same results.
