The Dark Star - Results

Well here we go:

Best Overall: Me at 5-0 :)
2nd Best Overall: Nice fella playing Deathwing from Toronto (4-1)
3rd Best Overall: Tyler (I can never remember his last name) (5-0)

Best Appearance: Ryan Carlson (my 5th round opponent)

Best Sport: I don't know his name

Best General: Tyler (by tie breakers, 14/15 Objectives to my 13/15)

Overall was a pretty good time. I'll have a full review up and some batreps in the next few days.

I'm pretty sure once I look back at it in a few days and I'm going to have very little, if anything, to say negatively about it. I just always like to wait a few days so that the event settles in my head and I can give a fairly accurate impression.

I think the only thing I would have to comment on what the judges, there were only two, which in itself was not an issue, but they did not seem firm enough about rulings or completely informed on the missions but rather took the, "that is a tough decision route." None of it cause any issues for me or anyone I talked to bt I always imagined GT judges having a stronger presence.

The Source working with GW to make the May GT a 75 man sponsored event? I hope to find out more next weekend when I play in the CotN RTT sponsored but the Source.

Yea, it is deifnitely a fun looking take on GK. Played a small local tournament this Saturday and surprise surprise, top 3 armies with GK with psi-dreads and razorback/strike spam, haha. Its sad tthat the only armies which could draw the player base away from GK are other space marine armies, and the only way they will do that is by making them more powerful... at least in the competitive scene. Unless something big changes in 6th I doubt my Tyranids will ever win a tournament game again, haha.

Tyranids can totally win games. Both the other Nid player and myself went 3 wins and 2 losses with the bugs at Dark Star. You can totally do it. Check out some of Hulk's Tyranid articles and they will help you out, or just build a fun list. I think you will be surprised what they can do.

Oh, I played them this weekend, and I definitely won games. I just can't win vs. GKs, haha, No deepstriking, no infiltrating, SY 6/7/8 shots everywhere. Its as if I have to tailor my lists specifically to GK. Of course if I do manage to perfect one, it will probably be great vs. other armies as well, haha.

The DarkStar was a really enjoyable tournament and the level of detail for logistics was really top notch. What stood out most for me in the detail-arena was you got a small avery label sheet with your name on it x5 for the scoring sheets. You and your opponent swapped stickers rather than awkward spelling bee scenes of misspelling names.

I had the opportunity to play "Hulk" in game 5 for all the marbles and turned out to be a great game. Admittedly it was my 3rd GK match-up in a row (game 3: henchmen spam, game 4: draigowing, and game 5: strike-squad bonanza ;) / I've now played 3 total games against GK and buy into all the hype after reading everything "johnny Interwebz" has had to say about it.

I felt "Hulk" was able to bring a competitive list without resorting to some of the crazy-unfun under pointed tricks GK are known for. So my hat does go off to him.

2 armies of toy soldiers facing off against one another on good looking terrain and rolling dice to determine their fate... was a good weekend.

I recommend folks check out the Dark Star next year, the venue was fantastic.

LOL @ Ryan... I remember thumbing through the GK codex at FF when it was first released and thinking "wow" some if this stuff is gonna have to get dialed back with a FAQ or something but that obviously didn't happen. No offence meant against people who play GK either... If you play competitive tournaments, it only makes sense to bring the sharpest, biggest stick you can find/afford, and learn how to play it to its maximum potential.

Even though I was pulling for a Nid or (more likly) a Cron army to end up on top, Congrates on the win anyway Hulk.

Agreed on the venue, it was a really nice place with food and drinks onsite.
Tables looked awesome and everyone seemed pretty cool for the most part, although my buddy got dinged hard for sportsmanship for one of his games for no apparent reason.

Who knows, maybe next year I will compete if I ever get my Nids or Crons completely painted, especially if 6th Ed makes Nids "top shelf" competative again (wishfull thinging I know).

I didn't. While I play both Nids and Crons, I didn't register for Dark Star. Four of us from my gaming group just went to watch the two who did go.

Well Damon I wanted to bring my Crons but I was told that since I'd had them finished by someone else that I wouldn't be elegible for Best Overall if I brought them and since I didn't want to play wolves and this was a soft score tournament my Nids were out that left me with painting a new army for me to play with :)

Yeah Hulk, I saw you mention that in your other blog posting. I thought that was a weird restriction for the "Best Overall" category as well.
