Evolution of my Hive Fleet Pt.1

A comment from Ben from this post: http://hulksmash-homeplace.blogspot.com/2011/02/semi-local-rtt-rundown.html got me thinking about the evolution of my Nid list and where it’s going. So I think I’m going to share every step in the process. It gives me something easy to write about J

So I’ve been playing with ideas for Nids for a while. I took a Parasite based list similar to the above list to a 1850 tourney back last October or so in California and finished strong with it but it felt like it was missing something. This was a 2k tournament and originally I had decided to try a slightly upgraded version of my 1,850 list. That didn’t work out as planned since some of the models I wanted to use were a bit farther away than I’d had the urge to travel to so I settled for the list in the earlier post. That being said at 2k I was considering something more like what you see below.

HQ

Prime-105
Boneswords, Poison, Deathspitter

Prime-105
Boneswords, Poison, Deathspitter

Elite

2 Hive Guard-100

2 Hive Guard-100

2 Hive Guard-100

Troop

14 Devgants-140

10 Termagants-50

Tervigon-195
Poison, Adrenal Glands, Catalyst

Tervigon-195
Poison, Adrenal Glands, Catalyst

Fast Attack

5 Raveners-175
Rending Claws

5 Raveners-175
Rending Claws

5 Raveners-175
Rending Claws

Heavy Support

Carnifex w/Dual Dev’s-190

Carnifex w/Dual Dev’s-190

So as you can see it’s a much different list. It gives up a bit in the disruption unit by filling out another Ravener unit and adding 2 mini-fex stars. That being said after this weekend I’ve changed my tune the slightest bit. At 2k I’m thinking of running something more like this:

HQ

Prime-100
Boneswords, Poison

Elite

2 Hive Guard-100

2 Hive Guard-100

Troop

10 Termagants-50

10 Termagants-50

Tervigon-195
Poison, Adrenal Glands, Catalyst

Tervigon-195
Poison, Adrenal Glands, Catalyst

19 Gene Stealers-266

Fast Attack

5 Raveners-175
Rending Claws

5 Raveners-175
Rending Claws

Heavy Support

Carnifex w/Dual Dev’s-190

Trygon-200

Trygon-200

Based on the weekend I still want a disruption unit but I’m wanting rending claws and the ability to not get killed w/no FnP from Hellhounds so hence the stealers. Also fell in love with the damn trygon again so they are back in. Added the mini-fex to deal with a range of threats but kept my 2 units of ravs for rapid deployment. I think I can get by with one less Hive Guard unit since they’ll be busier than against my previous army dealing w/my Genestealers. Anyway this is the direction my 2k list is headed at the present. Hope that helps guys J

Looks sort of naked without your gargoyle hammer. ;)

So, one question that comes to mind is why not 10 and 9 for the stealers? You've got the troop slots for it and it would give you more flexibility in assaults and infiltration locations. Very hard to 19 of anything completely out of sight.

You might also consider sword and whip on the prime to help make the fex a more frightening cc prospect. Regen on him would also be a cheap boost to the survivability of the unit.

The first list is similar to Kirby's. He's just dropped his tyrant to run more Rav's. He's a T'fex > C'fex man though.

I do like the stealers personally and would like to see a unit in the 1850 list. It would mean down-grading the devgants and reducing the Rav squad sizes though.

@Ben

The Genestealers are one big unit because it's scary as hell :) Basically only using 9-10 models in two seperate units doesn't work for me. Mostly because they will be deployed to start and I won't ever be outflanking them.

@Brother Loring

I just can't get a T-fex to work with my playstyle. I've come to the conclusion they just aren't for me. In regards to getting the Stealers into a 1850 list it's something I'm considering. I'm also considering Ygmarls for it too. I've got 2 more tournaments before Adepticon to finish tweaking.

Hulksmash nice coloured blog but you need pictures man, it just looks loads better. Also I've found the intense debate comment system to be superior over the blogger one was you can directly reply to people and have a better conversation.

List evolution is interesting. When building lists I always have something what must be in i.e Hive Guard and Hive Tyrant, though the Tyrant isn't a mandatory choice it's just because he's cool! I played Tyranids for about a year with the old codex then got back into them with the new codex came out, my original list was dual flying Tyrant, double Trygons, double Zoanthropes, double Tervigons and a big bunch of Gargoyles. It was alright though I didn't get on with Tervigons and that's because I used them wrong.

I then moved onto triple Trygon, and mass Hormagaunts and full house of Hormagaunts.

Now I'm using triple Tervigons, single foot Tyrant, 'Stealers and Dakka Fexes. How things change eh? lol.

Hulk - nice reading your thoughts. You get to attend far more tournies than I do so it's nice to see the performance out there in the real world.

Question - if you DO end up with the dual Fex Star (which is a nice choice I think) - I would think that giving the primes whips and the fexes Spine Bank would be a good choice. That is one of the few units in the dex that can assault into cover and strike first, and no one likes getting swung at by a Fex before they can go and then a prime going simo. Just some food for thought.

I would really like to see your layering article after tonight. :p I played an MC/assault army against Mech IG, and the mission came up spearhead/annihilation. Lots of terrain, but almost nothing fully blocking LOS. He seized and proceeded to just shoot me off the board. First turn killed off the genestealers (manticore, pask in punisher) and dinged up the Trygons, 2nd and 3rd turn saw the end of the Trygons. Nothing made it closer than about 8" to his lines. Worst beating I've taken in a while with bugz, and the last one was also IG/spearhead/annihilation. Is there a layering trick I am missing here or is this Tyranid Kryptonite?
